Historic Charlotte Court House Library Renovation
Milton Construction Company occasionally ventures beyond its Appomattox home base. Recently, the team traveled to Charlotte Court House to complete a major renovation of the historic Charlotte Courthouse Library, helping preserve this important local landmark while updating the space for continued use.
Preserving the Historic Craftsmanship of Charlotte Court House Library
Step inside the renovated Charlotte Court House Library and you immediately see a blend of restoration and modernization. From the refinished stairs, new circulation desk, and updated lighting to preserved areas of exposed timber framing, the renovation highlights both the library’s renewed functionality and the craftsmanship of the original building. Open sections of the ceiling and stair framing reveal historic mortise-and-tenon joinery, wood-lathe marks, and even the original structural brickwork—giving visitors a unique opportunity to see how the building was constructed and appreciate its history.
Restored Details That Bring the Library Interior to Life
Here we highlight several renovation details. The large south-facing window was repainted. From the upper level, looking at the same south-facing window, visitors can also see the finished flooring and the new finials added to the stair newel posts, providing a clear view of the craftsmanship.
Restoring the Library’s Original Flooring
The original flooring was refinished to preserve its historic character.
The finished surface also reveals the original cut nails used to secure the boards, providing another glimpse into the building’s history.
Existing Radiators and Steam Pipes Refinished in Needlepoint Navy
They were painted to add a distinctive finish to the historic interior. The steam pipes also created an added challenge when installing the new crown molding around them.
Genealogy Room Renovation
The genealogy room received a fresh coat of paint, with the bookshelves refinished also in oil-based Needlepoint Navy paint.
The original floors were also refinished, while a simple, elegant chandelier and new customer-provided conference table completed the updated space.
Second-Floor Landing
They were painted to add a distinctive finish to the historic interior. The steam pipes also created an added challenge when installing the new crown molding around them.
Refinished Stairs and Restored Front Entrance
Leaving the renovated library, the refinished and painted stairs lead to the front entrance, where the door was repainted in Needlepoint Navy.
A glass pane in the side transom was also replaced and reglazed, completing the restored entrance.
