Den Renovations with Custom Fireplace Mantle Centerpiece
This home renovation project focused on a main living area. This den transformation began by stripping away the heavy, dated wood paneling to create a fresh canvas. By replacing the dark walls with smooth, modern drywall and swapping faded stain-grade trim for crisp paint-grade material, we completely shifted the room's energy. To complete the functional update, we integrated two new interior doors, providing a seamless and polished finish to the updated living space.
The centerpiece of the renovation is the mantle, designed and fabricated in-house to achieve a seamless fit. Featuring an intricate molding profile, the millwork was precision-engineered to wrap around the original brickwork. To complement the new woodwork, we applied a delicate whitewash to the exposed brick and transitioned the room’s palette to a lighter, airy tone—striking a stark contrast to its dark, wood-paneled past.
To fully appreciate this den’s transformation, one must look back at its origins as a traditional man cave. We began by removing the dark wall paneling to fundamentally shift the room’s lighting and feel. This initial phase was the key to unlocking a light, lovely space designed specifically for modern entertaining and relaxation.
The final renovation stands in stark contrast to the 'before' and 'during' phases.
This mantle is a one-of-a-kind piece. We took individual boards and hand-carved trim, then stacked them together in layers to build a beautiful, custom design.
We traded the old door for a stained-glass door to help reflect light and make the den feel bigger and brighter. We also got rid of the old half-door and the messy-looking vent below it. The new louvered door covers everything up beautifully while creating a handy new storage spot.
This home renovation is more than just a room. While it offers a serene escape for daily unwinding, it truly finds its soul during the holidays, creating a lovely spot for seasonal gatherings.
